Yalwal Road Upgrades, West Nowra and Mundamia
Yalwal Road, located in West Nowra, is currently in the investigation and design phases for proposed upgrades to the road.
The proposed upgrades include:
- an off-road shared user path
- road widening
- kerb and gutter
- turning lanes at George Evans Road
- roundabouts at Lightwood Drive and Rannoch Drive.
In addition to necessary maintenance works, Yalwal Road has been identified in a number of strategic planning documents, requiring incremental upgrades to improve liveability and cater for expected traffic growth from new urban release areas.
Council’s Pedestrian Access and Mobility Plan (PAMP) and Shoalhaven Bike Plan strategies both identify a proposed shared user path on the northern side of Yalwal Road to complete the existing missing link in the path network between Albatross Road and Filter Road.
In addition, the Shoalhaven Contributions Plan 2019 collects funds for the upgrade of several intersections on Yalwal Road through West Nowra to directly address the expected traffic impacts of the Mundamia Urban Release Area (URA). Mundamia is the first of several planned URA’s and long term investigation areas identified off Yalwal Road in the Nowra Bomaderry Structure Plan 2006. Financial assistance from the NSW Government’s Low Cost Loan Initiative is helping Council to deliver these intersection upgrades early to support development in Mundamia URA.

The Shoalhaven Contributions Plan includes a further project to upgrade the capacity and safety of the intersection of Albatross Road/Yalwal Road. This work is also in development phase but is separate to the design of the above-mentioned works.
