Where is the Nowra Riverfront Precinct?

The precinct extends along the southern foreshore of the Shoalhaven River on either side of the Nowra Bridge. It is generally bound by Hawthorn Avenue to the east, Hyam Street and Graham Street to the south and Shoalhaven Street to the west. For more detail view the map on Council’s website.

What work has been done so far in planning for this precinct?

The Nowra Riverfront Precinct has been considered in a number of strategic studies over many years that were first formalised into a preliminary master plan in 2018.

In 2020, the NSW Government formed the Nowra Riverfront Advisory Taskforce (NRAT)  to help drive the precinct revitalisation, source government investment, ensure the planning is coordinated and aligned to other major projects and prioritise development opportunities. As part of the work of the NRAT, Council is currently managing the preparation of a range technical and cultural studies and plans necessary to determine how the precinct could be used in the future.

The supporting studies include  a ‘Connecting With Country’ Framework, Integrated Transport Plan, Flood Impact and Risk Assessment, Geotechnical Study, Urban Design Review and more specific Cultural Heritage studies. The results of the studies will provide input into an updated precinct masterplan.

Why are you engaging with the community now?

As the results of the initial technical studies and early stakeholder engagement become known, now is the time to seek the input of our broader community to feed into the update of the precinct master plan.

Engagement with local Aboriginal leaders, knowledge holders and community is  underway and will help to formulate a ‘Connecting with Country’ framework for the precinct that ensures that Aboriginal cultural knowledge is valued and respected throughout the activation of the riverfront. Early engagement has also already begun to understand the aspirations of major landowners, both for their own land and for the wider precinct.

With many of the technical studies anticipated to be complete this year it’s now the time to bring in the ideas of our community to influence the design and use of the precinct.

What types of community engagement activities will there be?

The Community engagement involves a series of interactive workshops and activities that will include a ‘pop-up’ information stall at the Nowra Bridge Walk event, 5.30pm to 8pm Thursday 23 February. From this date, an Online Survey will be available until 31 March. A stakeholder workshop will be held in late March 2023, after which the first draft masterplan will be shared with the community for further feedback in May/June. A presentation of the final community masterplan will be provided back to the community in the second half of 2023. Further details on these opportunities for community input will be released due course.

How can I have a say on what’s included in the precinct?

You can complete the Online Survey before 31 March 2023, or register your interest in attending the stakeholder workshop. You can also follow the process as it unfolds by subscribing through the 'Stay Informed' tool on the Get Involved web page.

Where do I find more information about the Nowra Riverfront Precinct?
