The Access Areas for Dogs Policy is Council’s guiding document in relation to dogs in the public domain. The Policy provides conduct guidelines and defines off-leash, on-leash and prohibited dogs areas for land and assets within the ownership, management, care and control of Council.

    A report on the Review Access Areas for Dogs Policy was provided to Council's Strategy and Assets Committee meeting on Tuesday 11 June 2019. At this meeting, it was resolved that Council:

    1. Not proceed with the review of Council’s Dog Off Leash Policy.
    2. Staff research and consult with community providing additional off leash areas on a case by case basis, and report back findings to Council with estimated costings in the first half of 2020.
    3. Recommence the trial of the pathway street signage on the Adelaide Street Reserve, Greenwell Point.
    4. Receive a further report setting out the business case for increasing funding for Ranger Services to educate and enforce existing dogs off leash areas.

    Council staff will now enact this resolution.

    A report on the Access Areas for Dogs Policy Review will be submitted to Council's next Strategy and Assets Committee Meeting on 11 June 2019, for Council's consideration and to determine a way forward.

    For those interested in making a deputation to this meeting - please visit Council's website for details on the application process. A "Deputation" means a person, or a representative of a group of persons, appears personally before a council or council committee in order to address the council or committee on a particular matter.

    Members of the public are welcome to attend all Council and Committee Meetings. The Strategy and Assets Committee Meeting on Tuesday 11 June 2019 will start at 5pm and will be held in Council Chambers at 36 Bridge Rd, Nowra. The meeting agenda will be available on Council's website closer to the meeting.

    Council staff presented a briefing to Councillors on Thursday, 9 May 2019 regarding the proposed Access Areas for Dogs Policy Review.

    The briefing highlighted the intention that the Community Group to be a focus group only and that there would be extensive consultation with the whole community via a number of avenues. It also outlined the process for the consultant and the Community Group establishment.

    A report will be submitted to Council's next Strategy and Assets Committee Meeting on 11 June 2019, for Council's consideration and to determine a way forward.

    Council’s Strategy and Assets Committee considered a report on the Access Areas for Dogs Policy and Guidelines on Tuesday 9 April 2019. The report sought to commence with Engagement of Consultant, Allocation of Budget and Establishment of Community Reference Group.

    Council resolved that the matter be deferred, pending a Councillor Briefing (date to be determined shortly).

    Council’s Strategy and Assets Committee will consider a report on the Access Areas for Dogs Policy and Guidelines on Tuesday 9 April 2019.

    The report seeks to engage the preferred consultant and formally commence the review and endorse the membership of the Community Reference Group.

    Shoalhaven City Council is seeking a panel of interested community members who will play a vital role in the review of the Access Areas for Dogs Policy and Guidelines.

    The group will work with Council staff and consultants and provide meaningful input and feedback on the operation and suitability of existing dog areas and signage, the potential for new dog areas, and more.

    If you are interested in being involved in a unique opportunity to make our public spaces safe and friendly for all, and are able to dedicate your time to attend workshops that are facilitated by consultants, this opportunity is for you.

    It was resolved at Council's Strategy and Asset Committee Meeting on 16 October 2018 that Council:

    1. Bring forward the timing of the comprehensive review of the Access Areas for Dogs Policy from 2020 to the first half of 2019.
    2. Have the policy review undertaken in consultation with Ranger Services as the enforcement body, and the broader community, and consider the process for new off-leash dog areas including site criteria and fencing arrangements.
    3. Seek quotations for the engagement of a suitably qualified and experienced consultant to facilitate the review, and a further report be presented to Council recommending a preferred consultant and an identified funding source.
    4. Defer a decision in relation to an off-leash dog area in the Sussex Inlet District and at Greenwell Point, and signage, until the comprehensive review of the Access Areas for Dogs Policy has been completed.
