In 2021 the NSW Youth Week is from 16 to 24 April and the NSW Seniors Festival is from 13 to 24 April. This presents a unique opportunity to offer a range of intergenerational and interest-based activities that bring our community together in new ways.

The focus of this year’s program is to highlight the value and importance of bringing generations together through intergenerational activities and events. Here are just a few of the many benefits these programs bring to participants of all ages:

  1. Energises older adults and gives a sense of purpose, especially when they are sharing their experience and skills.
  2. Reduces a sense of isolation for older adults and potentially relieves or lessens depression.
  3. All generations learn new skills.
  4. Helps younger generations understand aging and face their own aging more positively.
  5. Dispels negative stereotypes and encourages bonding among generations.
  6. For young people who do not have grandparents or other seniors in their families, engaging with older adults fills a social gap.

The NSW State Government themes for these events are ‘In our nature’ for Seniors Week and 'Together more than ever’ for Youth Week.

Shoalhaven Youth and Seniors Festival 2021 will combine these themes to focus on interest-based intergenerational activities and events that promote wellbeing and mindfulness to support a happy healthy community.

Community Feedback

Last year, we asked the Seniors community what they wanted included in the 2021 Seniors Festival. The consultation results are published in the Document Library on this web page.

Interested in hosting an event or activity to celebrate Youth and/or Seniors Week?

The Youth and Seniors Festival Grants Program 2021 has been combined to provide funding to local community groups and organisations to host events or activities that celebrate and support youth and seniors in the Shoalhaven.

This year the Youth and Seniors Festival Grants Program is providing an incentive for youth and seniors organisations and community groups who are partnering to collaborate on designing activities and events which provide opportunities for youth and seniors to come together to celebrate through shared experiences. While intergenerational events and activities are encouraged this is not a grant requirement. You can also apply for funding for an individual Youth event or a Seniors event.

Grant applicants will be expected to consult with youth and/or seniors for inclusion in the planning of the events and activities.

The closing date for Youth and/or Seniors Week Festival activity grants has been extended to 12 midnight, Sunday 7 March 2021.

For information about the grant visit the Community Grants Program Get Involved website.
