Council is undertaking the design and construction of a Shared User Path (SUP) along the River Road foreshore between Hay Avenue and Renown Avenue. This project intends to link future and existing shared paths that have been identified in the Public Access and Mobility Plan and endorsed in the Shoalhaven Heads Landscaping Master Plan.
Background
Council successfully applied for a 2022/23 “Get NSW Active Program” grant from TfNSW (Transport for NSW) to design and construct a SUP along the River Rd foreshore as per the PAMP (Public Access and Mobility Plan) and Shoalhaven Heads Landscaping Master Plan. The funded section of the project runs from Mathews Street eastward, connecting with an existing path. This section is identified as Stage 2, following the works between Renown Avenue and Mathews Street.
Due to delays resulting from community consultation during Stage 2, Council decided to proceed with Stage 3 of the project. TfNSW has approved this change, and Stage 3 now aims to construct a 2.5m wide SUP. The intention is to link future proposed SUPs on Hay Avenue to the existing SUP along the River Road foreshore at Renown Avenue.
Objectives
The main objectives of the project are:
To provide a safe alternative for cyclists and pedestrians. Council received feedback that pedestrians frequently walk along the road, creating hazards for motorized vehicles. The new shared path will promote a safer environment for cyclists and pedestrians.
To provide spaces for active lifestyles. The River Road foreshore is a beautiful green space that could be utilised for active recreation, such as cycling and walking. The construction of a SUP will make the area more accessible and encourage active lifestyles, fostering community well-being.
Community Engagement
Council sought to raise awareness of the project and gather feedback from the community to finalise the proposed route of the path followed by a site walkover with the community to finalise the path route.
The final Shared User Path Routecan be viewed in the Document Library on this web page.
