Who is organising the Queen's Baton Relay event in Nowra?

The Commonwealth Games organisers invited Shoalhaven City Council to be involved in the Queen’s Baton Relay with a section of the Relay being held in Nowra.

Council is working with the Queen’s Baton Relay organising team assisting them with the relay logistics as well as creating a celebration event for the community at the final baton destination on the day at the Shoalhaven Entertainment Centre.

What is the Queen's Baton Relay?

The Queen’s Baton Relay provides everyday Australians an opportunity to play their part in the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games.

The specially-designed Baton will carry a message from Her Majesty The Queen on a 288 day journey across the Commonwealth before reaching Australia on 25 December 2017.

This journey will see the Baton passed between thousands of people throughout Africa, the Americas, the Caribbean, Europe, Asia and Oceania and even through the Shoalhaven at Nowra –a remarkable journey that shares the Gold Coast’s vibrant spirit and excitement for the Games with the world.

Travelling the length and breadth of Australia for 100 days, the Baton will not only visit but spend quality time in Australian Celebration Communities in every state and territory. The Relay will showcase Australia’s history, culture, traditions, geography and people to the world.

On Monday, 5 February 2018 the Baton will travel down the South Coast from Wollongong, Kiama and then finish with an exciting community event in Nowra.

Where do I see the Queen's Baton Relay

The baton will arrive in Nowra in a spectacular array of excitement as a navy helicopter flies with the baton over the Shoalhaven River, over the Nowra bridge and is then lowered into a vessel to be rowed to the shore near Nowra Aquatic Centre. The Centre will be a hype of activity with bands, food and entertainment.  The pool is open free of charge for the afternoon.

The baton will make a spectacular arrival by Navy helicopter flying over the Shoalhaven River, Nowra CBD and the Nowra bridge before landing on Greys Beach. From there it will travel across the river on a Navy RHIB to the Nowra Aquatic Centre which will be hosting a free festive afternoon of food, music entertainment and pool entry.

The relay convoy will move past the hospital, showgrounds, down Junction Street, and make a round trip through the city centre and onto the Shoalhaven Entertainment Centre where a community event will take place.

Our streets will be aligned with colour, people and music welcoming the baton bearers as the baton makes its way to the final destination for the day in Nowra, the Shoalhaven Entertainment Centre.

The lawns of the Shoalhaven Entertainment Centre will be transformed into an open air carnival of music, food and entertainment that excites and ignites community pride whilst generating enthusiasm and building anticipation for the upcoming Commonwealth Games.

The community event features a circus and sporting theme attracting over a thousand people as schools, sporting groups and families will get involved in the spirit of the day.

Various competitions will be held in the lead up to the day to decorate and activate the City involving retailers, schools, DJs and a Photo and Art Competition to engage photographers and artists.
