The $330,000 project proposes to install a single lane roundabout including all traffic calming, line marking, lighting, signage, and pedestrian improvements, at the intersection of Bannister Head Road and Tallwood Avenue, Mollymook, improving safety for motorists and pedestrians alike.

The project was nominated as a proactive proposal, following completion of a formal road safety audit that has supported the improvements proposed.

The project was nominated as a proactive proposal, following completion of a formal road safety audit that has supported the improvements proposed.

Other traffic calming measures were considered, however, will not address the traffic conflicts and sight constraints at the intersection, and a favourable location is unlikely given the residential nature of the area and perceived adverse noise impacts associated with speed control devices. AUSTROADS (best practice traffic management and road design guidelines) recognise roundabouts as the preferred method of traffic calming.

Stage 1 of the Hazcorp subdivision at Narrawallee also had a requirement to pay a contribution towards the subject roundabout. The fees were paid to Council in 2018 and Council has been seeking grant funding opportunities to fund the balance of the project, which led to this nomination.

Council has recently received advice from the NSW Government that the project has now been approved for funding under the Federal and State Government Stimulus Commitment and, as a stimulus measure, requesting Council to tighten the timeframes and construct the project this financial year.

It should be noted that as the funds are approved for this specific project for the roundabout at the intersection of Bannister Head Road and Tallwood Avenue, Mollymook, they are not transferrable to other project locations.

Following the original consultation with the community and the Ulladulla and Districts Community Forum and Narrawallee Ratepayers Association in November 2019, the feedback provided is being considered in preparing the current designs. Due to the tight timeframes Council has progressed the design with concept plans.
