FAQs
Why does the Nowra Precinct need renewal now?
The Nowra Precinct contains about 560 social housing properties owned by Homes NSW that don’t align with the current demographics or needs. Many of these properties are also ageing as they were built in the 1960s and 1970s.
We know that there is a stronger demand for a range of contemporary housing types within the Precinct.
To meet the demand for contemporary housing types and to increase the number of properties in the precinct, we are taking the opportunity to look at future renewal of the area.
How will community feedback influence the final strategy?
We are committed to undertaking genuine community consultation which will help inform development of the strategy.
Once the feedback has been considered, the strategy will be drafted, and the community will have further opportunities to comment on the masterplan and planning controls.
Will current residents be displaced during redevelopment?
Homes NSW has commenced projects to increase social housing in and around Shoalhaven local government area which increases the number of households that will be able to access social and community housing.
The Nowra Precinct Renewal Strategy is a plan that will identify opportunities for projects for government to lead over the next 5 to 10 years. Detailed project planning will need to be developed after the Renewal Strategy is completed before any housing redevelopment work is conducted. Southern Cross Housing and Homes NSW will keep residents updated on future project plans.
When will current residents need to move?
Residents will not need to move during the development of the renewal strategy. This is the first step in a long-term planning process. Any future redevelopment will be carefully staged to support current residents.
