Moss Vale Road URA - Naming of New Suburb
Council is currently planning the delivery of two major residential areas in the Nowra-Bomaderry area. The Urban Release Areas (URAs) are located on both sides of Moss Vale Road between Bomaderry and Cambewarra and are currently known as the "Moss Vale Road North" and "Moss Vale Road South" URAs.
Due to the size of the URAs, and the number of new homes that they will provide, Council is proposing to give this urban area a new suburb name to distinguish it from the surrounding rural localities of Cambewarra and Meroo Meadow. This approach is also important to assist emergency services, postal services, delivery companies, and the like with serving the future community.
Background
The Moss Vale Road URAs have been identified for future urban expansion since 2006. The two URAs will provide land for residential and commercial development, public open space and environmental protection, and are expected to provide approximately 3,500 new homes for the Nowra Bomaderry region. Further information on this process can be found on the Planning for Growth in Nowra Bomaderry project page.
The Moss Vale Road URAs are located across the current suburb boundaries of Cambewarra and Meroo Meadow, as shown on the map below. Find out more about the new suburb boundaries via the News Feed article below.
Due to the size of URAs and the anticipated number of homes that will be delivered, it is considered appropriate to rename the broader URA precinct as a new suburb to:
- Distinguish between the new URAs and adjacent rural areas, helping to contribute to the identity of the new community.
- Capture the URAs, noting the size, both area and number of proposed homes, and range of other uses (retail and open space).
- Provide clear and consistent addresses for future residents, emergency services and postal and delivery services.
Community Consultation
Following the guidelines of the NSW Geographic Names Board (GNB), initial consultation has been undertaken with local interest groups, including the Nowra Local Aboriginal Land Council (LALC), Council’s Aboriginal Advisory Committee, and the Shoalhaven Historical Society. Read the News Feed article below for further information about the NSW Geographical Names Board - Place Naming Policy.
A broad range of local history and Aboriginal (Dharawal) language resources were consulted to arrive at a shortlist of eleven (11) potential names in line with the NSW GNB’s Place Naming Policy. The shortlist also included some names that were put forward by local interest groups. This shortlist was refined following feedback from the Nowra LALC and NSW GNB to remove words that were deemed unsuitable or that did not pass the GNB’s initial ‘duplication’ test.
