Consultation has begun on a fitting local tribute to Ulladulla icon Margaret ‘Margie’ Sheedy who passed away in March last year.
The recipient of an Order of Australia for service to the community, Margie is widely celebrated for her tireless fundraising and her passionate support for a wide range of community projects and institutions in Ulladulla.
Margie together with other local volunteers worked tirelessly raising funds to keep the Ulladulla Sea Pool open. She was a founding member and performer with the Milton-Ulladulla Entertainers, a member of the Ulladulla and Districts Garden Club and a long-time volunteer with the Milton Follies community group. Margie was acknowledged for her constant efforts is raising funds for Milton Ulladulla Hospital Auxiliary, Alkira Lodge in Wollongong, Yurana Cancer Kids holiday homes and the Milton Ulladulla Cancer Outpatients appeal. Margie was a keen gardener, and she often opened her flower filled and slightly eccentric garden to raise funds for many charities.
Following a resolution of Council in June 2024, public consultation is now being undertaken on a suitable way to acknowledge Margie's contribution to the Ulladulla community.
The community will be asked to provide their thoughts on the following options as potential ways that Margie's contribution to the Ulladulla community can be recognised:
Option 1: Re-name the Ulladulla Sea Pool to the Margie Sheedy Sea Pool.
Option 2: Naming the currently un-named reserve (Wason Street) next to the Ulladulla Sea Pool the Margie Sheedy Reserve.
Option 3: Install a suitable memorial near the pool in the form of a bench with a plaque.
Once the results of the survey are known, Council may need to consult with local emergency services and the Geographical Names Board which is the NSW Government’s authority to assign names. The engagement team will also continue to work closely with the Sheedy family who will be asked to provide their input on the final outcome of this community consultation process.
