Boongaree
Boongaree (pronounced: boon-ga-ree) is a destination park located on the northeast edge of Berry, which is experiencing rapid population growth. Census data indicates the Berry – Kangaroo Valley area grew by 7.9% between 2016 and 2021 (ABS, QuickStats). This growth is placing significant pressure on public places and recreation facilities in the area.
The Boongaree Recreation Precinct projects aims to transform existing, aging local recreation facilities into a contemporary destination park. Boongaree has already cemented its role a popular gateway attraction to the Shoalhaven area.

Construction is yet to commence on the: reconciliation garden, playing field upgrades; long vehicle parking; and a fenced dog off-leash exercise area.

How do I pronounce it?
Boongaree (Boon-ga-ree) is a compound word, comprised of several nouns in local Aboriginal language.
Boon = means ‘arm’ in the Dhurga language. Boon is the arm where two creeks meet (sounds like the double ‘o’ in ‘broom’)
Ga Ree = means ‘snake’. There are snakes living in the area around Boongaree (sounds like the ‘ar’ in ‘far’ and ‘ree’ in ‘free’)

Stages 5 and 7 - Upgrade to the Western and Eastern Sporting Fields

The design of the main sporting field and junior field is currently being developed. A key design challenge is to incorporate effective drainage for the fields that is compatible with the conditions at the site during and after rain days. The design activity is being finalised by SPORTENG and this is planned to be concluded in December 2022.
We have investigated fast-tracking 45 car spaces of Stage 5 parking, which have been able to be brought forward to completion by early November 2022.
The design of the two fields and the ground drainage is currently being further developed from the initial design and this task will be completed in December 2022. Construction works would commence in 2023.
The proposed design includes:
- earthworks plan and establishment of a finished surface design model for the field
- stormwater and subsoil drainage for the field
- design of the new carparks and entry areas
- irrigation design for the field.
The sequence of construction activities will be the development of the main field and then followed by the adjacent car park. The last phase of construction, is currently Stage 5, the junior field and adjacent car park area. The key factors that may impact the completion date of construction will be the availability of contractors and the frequency of rain days. Following community feedback, Council are investigating fast-tracking part of the car parking in Stage 5. This may allow car parking along North St to be brought forward, subject to ensuring the safety of the public and contractors is able to be maintained. Council will provide an update on staging and programming once this feasibility assessment has been undertaken and the correct technical personnel have provided comment.

Car Parking at Boongaree - We are listening
Share Car Parking at Boongaree - We are listening on Facebook Share Car Parking at Boongaree - We are listening on Twitter Share Car Parking at Boongaree - We are listening on Linkedin Email Car Parking at Boongaree - We are listening linkWhilst we have loved seeing the heavy foot traffic the opening of Boongaree has brought, we also hear and understand the frustrations with the lack of available car parking.
The Boongaree project has been broken into 7 stages, with car parking included in Stages 1, 5 and 7.
We are looking into decreasing the parking pressure.
Whilst we don’t think fast-tracking the final carparks will help, due to other stages of construction planned, we believe there are other options which we are currently investigating for improvement.
The current works being planned are an increased area to the paved car park to the South East of the park. These works will be completed in September 2022 for the creation of 16 spaces. We will then implement additional parking in April 2023 and then further in November 2023 in the next stages of the project for the development of the Cricket field, in Stages 5 and 7.
We will aim to improve signage here to ensure the project stages as well as the parking options are clearly signed.

Council is encouraging visitors to Berry to participate in the 2022 Summer Longitudinal Survey which aims to identify the economic benefit that Boongaree will bring to the Berry Township.
The Boongaree area (previously known as Berry District Park) is being redeveloped to provide upgraded and new recreational facilities. Visitors are being surveyed at intervals over the duration of the project to produce data that can be used to identify economic impact. The development of Boongaree is an action in the Berry Strategic Plan designed to enhance commerce within the Township following the opening of the highway by-pass.
This survey will be completed in coordination with the Berry Chamber of Commerce. The information garnered will inform and enhance applications for grant funding for stages 4-7 of Boongaree and assist with current grant funding acquittals.
The survey closes on Monday, 7 March 2022.

The skate park construction is currently at 75% completion with the Pump Track due to commerce early November. Council is looking forward to Convic completing these works by early December.
Community input has been an integral part of the design process and has contributed time and efforts to making this a Regional skatepark. The skatepark has been designed to host competitions and provide a top-standard training venue.
The completion of the new skatepark and pump track will contribute to the skating and cycling facilities for Shoalhaven. With skateboarding now an Olympics sport, this is a great venue for training mini-Olympians.

Boongaree Reconciliation Concept Workshops
Share Boongaree Reconciliation Concept Workshops on Facebook Share Boongaree Reconciliation Concept Workshops on Twitter Share Boongaree Reconciliation Concept Workshops on Linkedin Email Boongaree Reconciliation Concept Workshops linkThe concept for the Boongaree Reconciliation Garden is only preliminary to provide Community with an understanding of the potential location, scale, and design. It will be subjected to many iterations prior to finalising first with the internal and external stakeholders, then at a broader Community presentation, Councillor Briefing, Public Exhibition and finally a Report to Council for endorsement.
Although the steps seem lengthy, this unique and important space will require meaningful conversation, research, and time in order to adequately capture what is needed. Council have created four Community workshops in order to capture the Community vision for this very special place. Although all of the workshops will build on the previous – Community is welcome to come to one or all.
As a starting point, please take a look at the Boongaree Reconciliation Garden Initial Concept Plan.
