Currently we have 1,839 km of roads (which if all laid out end-to-end, would cover the distance from Nowra CBD to Mackay in Queensland) and approximately475 buildings (including amenities blocks, sports facilities and community halls) that Council is responsible formaintaining.
Like most councils, much of our assets were built after World War II, and have not had the appropriate amount of funding invested each year to maintain them to a high standard. This lack of investment in asset renewal has led to a significant deterioration in the condition of Council’s assets and has created infrastructure backlog issues.
In fact, last year almost half of our assets were categorised as falling into ‘satisfactory to poor’ conditions, and right now we’re finalising an asset condition assessment across all of our roads and buildings for a thorough analysis of what’s needed.
