During the past decade, wages in Local Government NSW have seen a steady increase, with the most recent being 3.5% based on the Local Government Award. This year also saw an increase in legislated superannuation payments of 0.5% and an additional payment to staff of $1,000, as per the award. Despite these combined increases of more than 4%, we have recorded an increase of just 2.6% in employee costs. This is due to the organisation’s ongoing efforts to limit recruitment and overtime payments, which has offset the full cost of the award increase.

As wages rise, councils face difficult decisions about resource allocation and service provision, balancing fair compensation for employees with the need to deliver services effectively to the community.
