Batonbearer 1 - Name: Susan Courtney

Nomination Story: Susan has been a volunteer firefighter with the RFS for over 17 years. Helping with major disasters/fires not only in her own community but other communities when in times of need. She has been a part of the Women and Firefighting Australasia (WAFA) being president for the first year and then treasurer for six years. Susan has also been a long-running member of the Illaroo Soccer Club, where she has filled the positions of Vice President for four years. She has been the Junior Register for the last three years helping encourage kids into sports. This year she will be the Ladies Coordinator.

Batonbearer 2 - Name: Craig Norris

Nomination Story: Over the past eight years Craig has organised and raised over $80,000 for Cancer with his Call to Arms event in the community. He has been actively involved with the Cancer Council and CanAssist, and is passionate about helping those in his community fight the fight. Craig also has made a huge contribution to local soccer. He has built up STAGS FC which started with two teams to a current organisation of 30 plus teams and 300 plus players. He loves about providing local kids with a chance to participate in sport.

Collectively across the country, batonbearers will take more than a million steps to bring the Baton to its final destination, the Games’ Opening Ceremony on 4 April 2018 on the Gold Coast.

The uniquely designed Baton starts its Australian journey on 25 December 2017, 100 days before the Opening Ceremony. From Canberra on 25 January 2018, the Baton will switch gears to a traditional Relay and be carried by great Australians through Queen’s Baton Relay celebration communities around the country including the Shoalhaven.

Shoalhaven City Council Mayor, Amanda Findley said, “I am immensely proud of our batonbearers and the role they will take when the Queen’s Baton comes to town. Many have dedicated their lives to improving the lives of others, some have accomplished great achievements and others are the unsung heroes of our community.”

“For the batonbearers, this will be a rare and unforgettable experience when it arrives in Nowra on Monday, 5 February 2018 at 3.30pm. I encourage you all to get involved in the spirit of the day, supporting these great people in our community and sharing this exciting, historic moment for our region.”
