Local Strategic Planning Statement - Shoalhaven 2040

We’re preparing a new strategic land-use planning document, known as a Local Strategic Planning Statement, to identify the work Council needs to do to meet the communities’ needs over the next 20-years.

This Statement – Shoalhaven 2040 – will explain the basis for strategic planning with regards to economic, social and environmental matters. It will work with Council’s Community Strategic Plan, which has a similar but broader purpose explaining how Council will work to meet the communities’ needs. Shoalhaven 2040 covers how Council anticipates the City will change and the infrastructure and services required by its communities. This means it will address a broad range of topics such as:

  • the number, type, and location of new homes
  • providing infrastructure and service
  • job creation and economic growth, including strengthening Shoalhaven’s commercial centres
  • protecting and adapting to our environment
  • preserving our heritage, landscapes and the character of our towns villages, and neighbourhoods.

Background

Shoalhaven 2040 is the Shoalhaven’s first Local Strategic Planning Statement. It will act as a starting point, not a finished document, providing a record of our current land-use planning work and the work we need to do to plan the next 20-years. Shoalhaven 2040 can be reviewed and updated at any time, for example, as new planning matters emerge, work is completed, or a new council is elected.

The draft Shoalhaven 2040 will provide a Vision for Shoalhaven, summarise the City’s opportunities and challenges, identify Planning Priorities, and set Actions to deliver these priorities. The document will also set out policy statements on key planning activities and how we will work with the New South Wales Government to achieve some of the identified outcomes.

It is these areas of the document we would like your feedback on. Please provide your feedback by completing the online Community Survey by 13 March 2020.

Shoalhaven 2040 will direct future changes to Council’s planning and development controls. It will also inform other planning tools, such as the Contributions Plan, to ensure facilities and services are provided to meet the community’s needs.

The NSW Government will also use Shoalhaven 2040 to update its Regional Plan for the Illawarra-Shoalhaven Region and help inform its infrastructure planning and service delivery for schools, hospitals and transport.
